Backwater Flies is something that evolved organically out of our love for fly fishing. The team is made up of myself, Capt. Jesse Males, and long-time friend Anthony Merenda. For the last few years our blog site, Backwater Fly Fishing, has provided quality information such as fly tying videos, videos of destination and local trips, and other quality information that helps shape the world of fly fishing. The addition of the Backwater Flies online store is a way of making our favorite flies available to fly fishers around the world. If there is room in your fly box, we would love to tie for you!
Keep your hearts right, and your lines tight!

Capt. Jesse Males

Growing up in Florida, my passion towards fly fishing was something that developed naturally over time. I have fished my entire life throughout the Eastern United States for tarpon, snook, redfish, sea trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, and high mountain trout. Over the years I have made several destination trips out west to chase cutties in some of the toughest country I have ever been in. Recently my quest to follow fly fishing as a lifestyle has lead me to Central America to chase a number of exotic fish species. At the end of the day, all is well with my soul.

Anthony Merenda (Shipping Specialist/Fly Tester)

While currently crashing in the Tampa area and pursuing a career in culinary arts this snook junkie is no stranger to the fishing scene. Whether chasing spinner sharks off the coast of South Florida or creeping through the mangroves of Southwest Tampa bay in hopes of nailing some reds, sheepshead, trout or snook, there is never a dull moment with this guy.

ANY FISH THAT SWIMS (Official Fly Tester/Product Refiner)

Our biggest player on the Backwater Team are the fish themselves. All the flies that we sell have been proven to land fish in multiple waterways throughout the United States and Central America. Here at Backwater, we encourage catch and release practices and promote the mindset of always leaving a waterway better than the way you found it. All fisheries have treated anglers well and need our help to remain productive fisheries for the generation to come. Catch the fish, respect the fish, release the fish!
